Man shot in the groin during robbery

A man has been shot in a morning robbery in Sydney's south-west this morning.

Cake store owner 'John' was shot in the groin by one of two men as they tried to rob the Clemton Park newsagency in Earlwood at about 6.30pm.

Store owners in the area were surprised to hear of the shooting

"The police officer told me [John] heard the commotion and went to see what was going on,'' said flooring business owner Ross Pappas.

The man was fully conscious when taken to St George Hospital, but was in a serious condition, an ambulance spokesman said.

The spokesman also said there appeared to be an exit wound in his buttocks.

The two offenders fled the newsagency and were last seen in a black ute turning onto Bexley Road, police said.

Those with information on the shooting should call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
